Introducing Material Requirement Calculator for Masonry Work

“Estimating material requirements for masonry work will never bother you if you use this calculator.

This user-friendly calculator lets you estimate the quantities of brick or block for the masonry work and the cement & sand requirement for the mortar mix.

For any skilled builder or a DIY enthusiast, this user-friendly tool will estimate the material requirement for masonry work for any given volume, enhance project planning, minimize waste, and achieve optimal strength.”
Understanding the above calculation step by step with example
Steps to be FollowedExample to understand the steps
1. Determine the Volume of Total Work:
Length × Width × Height of the wall or walkways etc. you are going to construct.
1.1. Say, You are going to built a brick wall which has a height of 10 ft, length of 10 ft with a thickness of 5 in.
So the total volume of work would be (10x10x5/12) = 41.67cft
2. Calculate the Volume a single Brick/Block:
Length × Width × Height of the brick/block you are going to use for construction
2.1. Say, the brick you are going to use in your construction has a length, width and height of 9.5 inch, 4.5inch and 2.75inch.
So the volume of single brick is 9.5 x 4.5 x 2.75 = 0.07cft
3. Calculate Volumes of a single Brick with mortar:
(Length of Brick + Thickness of Mortar) × (Width of Brick + Thickness of Mortar) × (Height of Brick + Thickness of Mortar); typically the thickness of mortar is 12.5mm or 0.5inch
3.1 If you are constructing this wall with 12.5mm mortar thickness the volume of single brick with mortar will become (9.5+.5)x(4.5+.5)x (2.75+.5) = 0.09cft [Here 12.5mm equivalent to 0.5in thickness]
4. No of Brick required:
No of Brick is found by dividing the Volume of Total Work with Volume of Single Brick with Mortar
4.1. So, the no of brick required in above wall is = 41.67/0.09 = 443 Nos.
5. Mortar (Mixture of Cement-Sand) Required:
Total mortar requirement is determined by subtracting the total volume of brick required from total volume of work. It is to be noted that the Dry volume of mortar is generally 33% greater than that of Wet Volume of mortar
5.1. So, the mortar required is (41.67- 443*0.07)= 11.52 cft.
Now as it is the wet volume we have to consider the dry volume of mortar which is 33% higher that of wet volume.
So the dry volume of mortar becomes (1.33 x 11.52)= 15.56cft
6. Cement Sand Requirement:
Multiply the dry volume of mortar by the respective ratio for each ingredient. Typically the Cement-Sand mix ratio for mortar is 1:6
6.1. The cement volume is (15.56 x 1/7) = 2.22cft
The sand volume is (15.56 x 6/7) = 13.33cft
7. Convert Volumes to Weights:
Convert volumes to weights using the density of each material.
7.1. So, the cement required amount in kg is 2.22/0.246= 90.33kg
[1 kg cement equals to 0.0246cft]
